Major Family Home Remodel Proposed in Repton, South Derbyshire

Modern extension and full internal remodel proposed for character home in sought-after Repton, South Derbyshire.

Single-story brick extension with full-height glazing set against a traditional gabled house behind a lawn
Modern open-plan dining area with skylight, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, dark wood table and chairs, brick accent wall
Modern open-plan living room with wall-mounted TV, minimalist furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking garden

JSA Architects has submitted a planning application to South Derbyshire District Council for the extensive remodelling and extension of a detached home in the historic village of Repton.

The existing house, while full of character, no longer meets the needs of the large family who live there. The property suffers from poor natural light, outdated layouts, and practical limitations. The clients approached JSA Architects with a clear brief: modernise the house, maximise comfort and function, and enhance future resale value.

The proposals include a large, modernist rear extension constructed in dark grey brickwork, featuring full-height brushed steel sliding doors and a cantilevered canopy to frame south-facing views over the Derbyshire hills. Internally, the remodel will completely transform the home’s functionality, delivering a new media room, games room, gym, multiple en-suite bedrooms, and a study—alongside reconfigured living spaces fitted with the latest mod-cons.

While the rear extension introduces a bold contemporary element, the frontage and overall external character will be sensitively modernised, respecting the traditional streetscape while lifting the property’s appearance to match modern expectations.

Repton is one of South Derbyshire’s most sought-after locations, known for its heritage, village charm, and excellent schools. Enhancing the property's usability and aesthetic appeal has been central to the design approach, ensuring the home remains highly attractive both for the current family’s needs and future buyers.

The planning application is currently awaiting a decision.
